Gym Scribe
Workout Log & Planner, for iPhone
Gym Scribe replaces the notebook you carry to the gym. It plans a cycle of workouts, usually five, and moves on only when you finish one, so a missed day never throws the plan off. Log sets as you go, and it suggests your next weights.

Common questions
Where are my workouts stored?
Only on your iPhone. Gym Scribe has no accounts and no servers, and it never sends your data anywhere. Your iPhone's own iCloud or computer backup includes it.
How do I move my history to a new phone?
Restoring the new iPhone from a backup of the old one brings Gym Scribe's history with it. You can also go to Settings › Data › Export backup on the old phone, send the file to yourself, and use Restore backup on the new one.
How does the cycle work?
The app lays out every workout in the cycle up front, so each exercise gets its turn before anything repeats. The next workout is always the one after the last one you finished, whatever day it is. You can swap an exercise for the day or change how the cycle is built in Settings › Your cycle.
Can I use my own routine?
Yes. Go to Settings › Your cycle and choose My own routine, then open each workout to set its exercises in the order you do them, with sets and reps or a rep range like 8–12. You can also leave a spot for Gym Scribe to fill. To start over from the beginning, tap Set up my cycle again on the same page.
Can I change the order of my workouts?
Yes, with your own routine. Go to Settings › Your cycle and tap Change order next to Workouts, then hold the ≡ on a workout and drag it into place. Tap Done when you're finished. Workouts you've already done this cycle stay as they were; the new order applies to the ones still to come.
How do supersets work?
Open an exercise in Exercises, tap its pencil, and pick a partner under Superset with. Whenever both are in a workout they sit next to each other on Today: log a set of the first and the second is up, with no rest; log the second and the rest starts, then it's back to the first. Partners in the same group are also scheduled into the same workout. With your own routine you can also link two exercises in a workout with Superset with the next, and Settings › Workout › Superset links on Today adds a one-off option between exercises.
Can I fix a workout I logged wrong?
Yes. In History, open the workout and tap Edit. Change any reps or weight, add or remove a set, then tap Save changes. Your records and next targets are worked out again from it, and if the workout is in Apple Health it's updated there too. Undo is on the message that appears, in case you change your mind.
Can I skip an exercise today?
Yes, as long as you haven't logged a set of it yet. Tap Swap on its card, then press and hold Skip at the bottom. The workout still counts, and the exercise stays owed until a later workout in the cycle does it. If you have a freebie, it offers owed exercises first.
Can I time a plank?
Yes. Plank is a timed hold: tap ▶ beside a set, and after a 3-2-1 the timer starts. Tap again when you stop, and the hold is logged and your rest begins. Each hold uses a stopwatch, or a countdown that buzzes at zero and keeps counting, so you log the hold you actually did. To choose, open the exercise in Exercises, tap its pencil and pick a Timer. Wall Sit, Side Plank, Hollow Hold and Dead Hang are there too, switched off until you turn them on.
How do I share an exercise or my routine?
For an exercise, open it in Exercises, tap its pencil, then Share. For your whole routine, go to Settings › Your cycle › Share this routine. You get a link and a picture to send however you like, and anyone with Gym Scribe can add it from the link in a tap. If you try someone else's routine, yours is kept under Saved routines on the same page, ready to use again.
Can I import a workout from a screenshot?
Yes. In Exercises, tap Import and pick a screenshot or photo, or take one. Your iPhone reads the text itself and shows the exercises it found, so you can fix any names before adding them. It's new and won't always get everything right. The picture is never uploaded or kept.
Can I change the app's colour?
Yes. In Settings › Preferences › Notebook, pick one of eight colours and the Home Screen icon changes to match, or choose any colour of your own (the icon stays blue for that one).
The rest timer alert doesn't appear
Check that notifications are allowed in the iPhone Settings app, under Notifications › Gym Scribe. The rest timer itself can be changed or switched off in Gym Scribe's Settings › Workout.
How do I save workouts to Apple Health?
Open Settings › Apple Health in Gym Scribe and switch it on. Gym Scribe then saves each finished workout to Health. It never reads your Health data.
Can I use the app sideways?
It stays upright by default. Turn on Allow rotation in Settings › Preferences to use it in landscape.
How do I delete everything?
Settings › Data › Erase all data removes it all from the app. Deleting the app does the same. Workouts saved to Apple Health stay there until you delete them in the Health app.
